With that I mean the bombshell that was released last night.
Disney bought LucasFilms.
Now they own Indiana Jones and Star Wars. Also 'the Land before Time', and 'American Graffiti' and Howard the Duck, because we all know what kind of fan craze everyone has for it now.
Leia is now a Disney Princess, and Disney now owns the words of 'lightsaber' and 'droid'.
Episode 7 is slated for 2015, Episode 8 is slated for 2017/2018, Episode 9 is slated for 2019 to 2021.
It has been said that they are going to be making their own original story for the sequel trilogy, and it has been hinted at that it will take place at roughly 24ABY, following Lucas's logic of each triliogy taking 20 years apart (although, we don't know if it will hold true). Or it will be post Legacy of the Force, in the 45+ABY era, which is the best we could hope for. Since that would do the least to disturb canon.
Thoughts on the film and on the now Disney run Star Wars Empire?

i think the only thing this will change is who we blame for the ext 3 terrible star wars movies. We blamed lucas for the lame films that were ep.1-3 and now we will blame Disney for 7-9. Th films will still be junk, only differeence is who we will blame for our inability to accept star wars films of low quality. also...
I would expect the next 3 films to, as episode 1 was, be gear to a younger eneratio than any of us. Younger demografic, milder rating, continued bad films.

My initial reaction to the news was rather... dramatic... and full of rage. That said, I can't say I'm not curious and somewhat excited about the possibility it won't suck. It's a slim hope, sure, but dammit Jim, this might be our only hope... for more movies. Or something.
While I think it is likely that Disney will take things down on the target demographic scale, that may not be a sure-fire death sentence. I've personally been really enjoying the CG Clone Wars...
[pauses for some peoples' head to explode, then for the Creepy Duros to come clean it up]
...and that is certainly intended for a younger audience. Despite it's target demographic, it has a lot of elements that appeal to older audiences, like the political maneuvering and little signs of Anakin's downfall.
Also, think of some of the other "Disney-esque" movies which are directly intended for young audiences which have a noticeable interest in their adult audiences (Shrek and Toy Story comes to mind). If Disney has any sense whatsoever, it will temper its desire to appeal to young kids in an effort to sell toys/merchandise with the fact that A) the parents of young kids now/when the new movies will be out are our age and likely to be the second generation of die-hard fans, and B) video game playership and the purchase of high quality movie figures and the more costly memorabilia are usually people in their late 20s/early 30s. They'd have an interest in not pissing us off. Hopefully they'll keep that in mind.
On the other hand, it is quite likely they will disrupt the canon with whatever they do, which will likely cause much rage. It would be hard for them to do otherwise, however because there is so much EU canon out there, the canon is fractured into, what? 5 different levels, and even Lucas shat on the established canon with the new trilogy. So I would be surprised if Disney DIDN'T screw with the canon. I mean, I would love a movie version of the Thrawn Trilogy with the screenplay by Timothy Zhan like any good nerd, but I won't hold my breath.
And on a strangely third hand... I WILL RAGE if Disney turns Wookiees into teddy bears or something.

I DONT think that Disney will change star wars into a cartoon, nor do I think we can compare it to their animated movies. Lets admit it, George likes Disney, they've been associated for a while, rides, merchandise, and such at the parks. And Disney does have good movies, look at how well the Pirates turned out. Lets just hope they don't ruin the canon.
And.... well... you gotta admit.... how great it'll be just to be immersed by the star wars world again, to be in it again, the sound of the light sabers, the ships.... It won't be the same, no, but we'll have to wait and see what will happen. George Lucus is smart, very smart.
